Mary here. I'm so happy to welcome Lynn to Let's Talk. I'm so excited to host a Love Inspired Suspense novelist! These are such exciting reads. Wow! I asked Lynn: how has God led you on your writing journey? Here is what she said:

Opportunities and Adventures

Thank you so much for having me today!

I’m not one of those people who has been writing since they could hold a pencil. My love affair with books began (and continues) as a reader. I was the kid who never left home without a book. This was never a problem until I got my learner’s permit, slid behind the wheel, looked at my mom and said, “How do I get home?” She banned me from reading in the car until I learned my way around town!

All that reading gave me a great sense of how words should flow and during my school years I never had any trouble with writing assignments. I even had a professor beg me to change my major to English. As a Chemical Engineering student, I politely declined his request. After graduating from Clemson (Go Tigers!) I worked as an engineer for five years before leaving to stay at home with our daughter.

Over the years, I had often played with stories in my head, but it wasn’t until six years after leaving the workforce that an idea refused to leave me alone until I sat down at the computer one night with the thought, “How hard could it be?” It turned out to be so much harder than I thought! While I had an intuitive sense of what worked in a story, I had no clue what it took to write something anyone else would ever want to read. It was another six years before I got “The Call” and experienced the thrill of seeing my name on the spine of a book.

Sometimes friends who know my story will ask me if I regret not changing my major and pursuing writing years ago. I always say no. I don’t believe I missed anything along the way. Looking back, all I see are opportunities and adventures—some fun, some terrifying—that God used to shape me into the person I am now. Someone who loves Story, who savors a beautifully crafted sentence, and whose only regret about writing is that it seriously cuts into her reading time!

God’s hand has been on me every step of the way and His timing is perfect. The things we see as detours or dead ends are just plot twists in the story He is writing for us, and He writes the BEST stories.

I’m loving this chapter of my life. It’s certainly one I never could have imagined—and I have a pretty good imagination!

    1. I think we're going to have a lovely weekend. The garden is looking great, the beach keeps us away from the bugs. The skies are clear. And virtual sweet tea is iced and served. K. Come one come all!

  2. Sounds like a great book! I love being able to read mysteries that I don't have to worry about coming across pornographic scenes in the middle of a perfectly good mystery. Thank you for writing! tdrowlee1@gmail.com

    1. Hey, Connie!
Good words. I suppose, when we think about it, God is (whatever we are doing) for us and He (what we are doing) BEST. Right? I mean when I get up in the morning, I have a billion choices. Many good...many not so much. From there I can choose...and if I am truly listening to God my choices will be productive ones...in HIs eyes. They may not always seem that way to me...like picking up the kids toys for the 1,000 time, or making my bed (really? I'm going to sleep in it again tonight). Each a discipline. Each a step in the direction to becoming what God wants me to be. Yeah. Good thoughts, Connie. Thanks for sharing.

    2. Hi Connie - Thank you for your kind comment. I have to remind myself - often! - that He is writing my story and He (unlike some authors I know - cough, cough :)) is never at all confused about where the story is headed! I find so much comfort and encouragement in that!
      Grace & peace,
      Lynn
